Introduction
Estonian Waste Management Association was established in 1996 as non - profit association. EWMA has 40 members (private waste management companies) all over Estonia and 11 individual members. The highest body of the Association is the general meeting of its members. Each member of the Association have one vote at the adoption of resolutions at the general meeting. The Association is managed and represented by the Board appointed by the genal meeting. Members of the Board elect a chairman and a deputy chairman among themselves. The Board of Estonian Waste Management Association consists of 7 members. The term of proxies of the board is 2 years.
The mission of EWMA is to stand for the common interests of the members and to develop waste management in Estonia directed by the general principles of sustainable development.
Description of EWMA activities:
- Influence policies by providing advice
- Keep members of EWMA informed on legislation and environmental policies on regional and national level.
- Organize visits to the neighbouring countries to exchange experiences in the field of waste management.
- Promote opportunities for the experience and knowledge through seminars and discussions.
- Promote recycling and reuse through public actions.
- Develop co-operation framework between Estonian Waste Management Association and state institutions (also local governments).
- Develop co-operation between waste management associations of neighbouring countries (Finland, Norway, Latvia etc).
The main services and activities covered by the members of EWMA are the following:
- Collection and transport of municipal waste
- Collection and transport of seperately collected fractions
- Collection and transport of packaging waste
- Collection and transport of construction and demolition waste
- Recovery of costruction and demolition waste
- Collection, transport and treatment of hazardous waste
- Management of landfill site
- Collection of ferrous and non-ferrous metals
- Street cleaning
- Maintenance of green areas, parks and beaches
